I need to take out some specific information from a Btrieve database. I downloaded a ddf editor to be able to change the table names so It would go with my existing access database. I realize that you could delete the fields that you dont need in your connection through the ddf editor.
My question is .. will the query time be shorter if you edit the ddf file so it will only show the fields you need? Basicly what´s the benefits of editing your ddf files?

ps If you have any other suggestions about cutting the time on queries, please let me know (currently it takes about 6 min)

I don't know if it will be quicker, but instead of select * you could just select the fields you want.

I think the general rule is keep it short and simple.

If you don't have to use 'order by' then don't that should speed things up a bit.

Hope this helps...

TomKane, thanks for your help..

I will do some more research of how to cut the query times.

I´m running a query in access to a btrieve database, when I run the query by it self it takes 6 min to get the answer but if I use the same query as the base for a Rapport the time is only 1:30... I´m trying to understand what´s going on behind the transfer, why it takes so much longer just running the query.

Thanks again!

Is there a particular reason why you are using btrieve through access? What I mean is that Btrieve can stand on it's own and it is possible to get something like crystal reports to directly query pervasive. Also pervasive has it's own query tools such as SQLScope (if version 7) or PCC if (2000)

Apologies if I'm missing the point...

It´s part of a report I´m writing during my internship. I´m looking into different ways of getting data from one program to be used in another.
The reason I´m using Access is that the business application that runs on pervasive btrieve cant give med the report I´m looking for. And as a way of learning my first step was to do a connection between the two systems and make the report. My next step will be to do the same report using Crystal Reports. It´s going to be a good learning experience solving the same problem using two different approach angles.

(I´m running Pervasive 2000i SP4, I will look into the PCC query tool)

Thanks again
