Does anyone have any tricks, guidelines, dos and don'ts for bending 2" PVC schedule 40. I have an installtion that needs a custom elbow angle. I have thought about using a torch to heat the PVC, but thought I should get some input from some of you, who may have "been there and done that" and not melt everything in the process.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

heat gun will work better than torch in my opion . just try to heat it evanly and work up some kind of mandrell with the angle you want .

I hadn't thought of using a heat gun. I have one that I use for shrink tubing and previously to that, when I needed a heat source for troubleshooting older electronics with intermittent heat related problems. I will try your suggestion.

Thanks!

We used to use the exhaust pipe of the van in a pinch. Seriously, it worked well.

I used to be an electrician. Call a local industrial/commercial electical contractor. They might have a PVC bender. It's a sleeve that goes around with a few collars so it woont kink it.

Jim...there are a lot of stock ells that are gentle bends, not just the long or short 90 degree sweeps. With a package of collars and those pre-made fittings that should work for most bends. I would hesitate to inhale tailpipe exhaust [smile].

I have used everything including a Bic lighter, whatever is available is fine...there may not always be convenient access for one tool or another, so be flexible [/pun].

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am aware you can get (order) different angle ELBOWs. Nobody usually stocks anything but 90s or 45s, and sometimes not even those in 2". (They also charge a premium price.) But in this case I had a requirement for an angle between 30 and 22-1/2 degrees where it comes out of the ceiling to reach the Unistrut. So I used a 45 and a 22-1/2 that I heated with my heat gun to get an angle close enough to clamp it on the Unistrut. So that worked out OK.
