Here is a more specific question on benchmarking:

Environment

Internet
  ¦
  vlan X
  ¦
Firewall
  ¦
  Vlan F
  ¦
router - - Vlan C - - Client
  ¦
  Vlan P
  ¦
Proxy

Packet flow:

Client sends a request - it goes through the router to network P and to the proxy server -
the proxy server then makes its request - which goes through the router to network f to the firewall -the firewall goes out onto network x the internet to get the requested information.

The information comes back to the client in the reverse.

The question:
To benchmark this proccess where should the sniffer be placed and what times should be recorded at each place?

If you are trying to measure and benchmark the response time of the application from the clients viewpoint, put the sniffer between the client and the router. If you are trying to benchmark the response time between the router and proxy, place the sniffer there. If you are trying to benchmark the firewall, place the sniffer between the router and firewall. Each device will add some delay to the traffic. The best solution is to have three sniffers and look at the traffic and time stamps across all three. This would provide a more accurate view. Otherwise your point of view will be skewed either way. For example, If you do it from the client side you have three devices to account for in the response time. If the option is to use only one sniffer I tend to lean between the router and proxy. You will see all the traffic either way and it is almost the half way point between all devices. Or rotate the sniffer between the three points and look at typical repsonse times. Good Luck and I hope this helps.

What time should be looked at?? Assuming an html request is sent, and I am between the client and the router. Should I look at the get request to the ack?
