I periodically run Belarc Advisor on my system, and file the reports.

Just now I ran it - it paused for a few moments at 56%, then continued on to 96%, and then stopped responding, and did not finish. This happened each time I tried.

I uninstalled it, and downloaded the latest install file from their site, just in case my install had gotten corrupted.

I reinstalled, and the same thing happened. It will not go past 96%.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be happening to cause this? It appears to be having a problem reading something???

Well, I discovered the problem. I started shutting down various of the startup programs, and did Spyuware Doctor first. It's been acting strangely in recent times, and I've had much dialog with PC TOOLS about the problems and error messages. They also have released a bunch of "upgrades" which I installed.

I disabled SD, and rebooted. Now all the problems disappeared. Belarc Advisor ran and completed. Everything speeded up the way it should have. NoteTab Pro which always loaded in 2 seconds, was back to that, whereas it was taking 10+ seconds with SD running.

All my software speeded up back to the fast times of the past.

I sent off the Belarc report to PC Tools, and advised them that SD was no history with me, until such time as they could resolve all their issues.

The other issues that I was having with SD were periodic error messages associated with SD re memory problems, and many other error messages.

I'm afraid that SD is off my list.

Anyone else have SD problems?

I'm not really familiar with Spyware Doctor, so my comments are more general than relative to that program.

A problem I see nowadays is the overlapping of various programs that all want to scan your computer in real time looking for "nasties", but all running at the same time in the background. For example some firewalls come with antispyware scanners, as do some antivirus scanners, and programs like Windows Defender, AVG Antispyware. and your own Spyware Doctor too. You can easily end up with several real time scanning programs all running in the background and at the same time.

Hi Linney,

I noticed one other change after disabling Spyware Doctor. In the task manager, the page file usage was running near 800 MB when SD was running. Since SD's been turned off, the page file usage is now less than 1/2 of that.

I'm not that knowledgable about the page file usage. But that does seem like a big reduction. It was using as much as everythihg else running in the background, and I do have a fair number of items running there.

Spyware Doctor has been showing lots of "problems" in recent times. I've been reporting to them about numerous different error messages that come up and refer to SD. They said they were aware of some of the issues I reported, and kept coming out with updated versions. But things just went from bad to worse.

My high end system had slowed to a crawl for programs loading and running. Things are back to "proper" fast performance now.

I do have several "security" programs that perform similar/overlapping functions. But til now, there have never been any significant conflicts.

If I had my way, I'd take all the writers of the "Nasty Stuff", and send them to the moon (one way ticket).

Linney,

There is a follow on problem associated with Spyware Doctor's complete removal from my system

In case you didn't notice it [unlikely :)], I have a new message posted entitled

Strange shutdown error message in XP Pro

Please read it and advise if you have any ideas what I can do here.

Thanks,

Ron Hirsch
