Sorry to bother you guys with this, most likely, stupid question but I am new to the world of networks. I am working at a university Police Department. The department domain is ABPD...however we have substations at different locations throughout the university. These different substations are residing on networks with a different domain, however the PD needs the substation machine to logon to the ABPD domain. We have setup the machine with the following:
IP Address: Dynamically assigned from the substation network
DNS Servers: Using the DNS servers for ABPD
WINS Servers: Using the WINS servers for ABPD
We can get to the internet from this substation machine, however we cannot log into the ABPD Domain. Do I have to do something different with the settings? Is it possible that a trust must be setup between the two domains? Thanks in Advance!!

Well, I guess my first question is which domain was this workstation on initially? If not the one you want it in now, then you have to "add" your computer to that domain in Server Manager. A user with administrative rights can do this for you. If the computer name is already there, go ahead and remove it and re-add it to the domain just to be sure nothing is corrupted. It sounds like you have all your ducks in a row, but you just can't get it to login.

Also, don't forget that you will need to have a user account in the domain you wish to login to (in most cases). Usually in multi-domain environments a trust is already setup where users from domain A can access resources on domain B, for example. But, users that have accounts in domain A cannot automatically login to domain B. Do you understand this concept. Most likely, YES, you will need a trust relationship between the domains and the extent of those trusts is to be decided by your IT guys, but my guess is there is one already there.

All that to say in simpler terms: Make sure your PC is added or removed and re-added to the domain you want it in and make sure you have a domain user account for this domain so you can login to it. Then if you need at resources (PCs and Servers) in another domain, that's where trusts come in.

Good luck and keep us updated...
