Beginner here- Question on Java & JavaScript

I remember someone who used to be around at one time. He knew Flash and he made special programs with it for his forum, like the Forum Scanner, which tells you on ICQ when someone has posted on the forums, a program that lets you post a few messages at one time, etc. I was thinking of learning to create programs like that for MY forum. Except I don't want to use Flash, on a count of it costs money to buy the program. Can you possibly do programs like this with Java and/or JavaScript? Just wondering.

My Java compiler STILL isn't working, so I may choose to switch over to learning Javascript, soon.

I STILL believe that Java is the queen of the web, I am sure the answer for you q is yes you can although I am not sure how you will going to implement this program, it is really depend on you and what kind of technology you wanna use. One thing, why your Java compiler doesn't work?
