I am trying to build my first web site and I want to have an intoduduction start up when you visit the page. I need to know how to even begin. I only want a simple introduction like a scrolling name with some music in the background.

Any thoughts???

Greekass,
This is the javascript forum but you asked about java, they are very different.
Being a beginner though the difference might not be clear to you.

I suggest for the scrolling name you look into the DHTML Marquee tag.

There are many scripts to do music. Take a look at this link:

I personally detest visiting a site that has background music or noises that startup without warning as it gets disruptive. I never return to sites that do not at least give me the ability to turn off the sounds.
I often listen to music while at the computer and so the sound is not muted and is often at a fairly high volume. When I am not listening to music and a web site hits me with a sudden blast of sound it bothers me.

Paranoid? ME?? WHO WANTS TO KNOW????

Marquee works on IE, Netscape (Mac & Win), Firefox (Mac & Win), Safari (Mac), Opera (Mac), and Camino (Mac)-(the browsers I've tried).

However, I have found that it is sometimes interpreted slightly different from browser to browser.

I stand corrected. However, not all of the popular versions of those browsers can handle the <marquee> tag, and here's a comment from one web design site about Netscape:

Now, Netscape 7 now DOES recognise the marquee tag!!

The only trouble is, you have no way of knowing which version of Netscape your page visitors may use, so it is still, unfortunately, not a reliable tag to use on your pages.

Trollacious, I don't disagree with that. :)
However, since my pages are all done as a hobby, I tend not to worry about people still using old browsers. I'm not still playing Combat on my Atari 2600. Well... I am, but it's through emulation. :D
