I've had a problem for three days now and I think I have exhausted everything that can be done. If someone can assist before I buy a new router, I'd appreciate it.

A few days ago I upgraded my cable modem speed to a slightly faster speed (2Mbps I think) over the phone with the cable company. They did something at their end and told me to re-boot my cable modem and I would see the improvement.

The desktop, which is Win98SE and 'hardwired' to the router worked fine but my laptop in the other room with Win98 did not connect back to the router.

I've called Linksys many times and they have done many things to try and fix the problem -- I have changed a lot of settings, reset the router a number of times and upgraded both computers to the latest drivers and firmware but it just will not work. They say that the router is just not sending out a signal. All else appears to be OK. The little 'WLAN act' light needs to be on and it's not...

The router is the BEFW11S4 and the notebook card is the WPC11. I know the notebook card is not supposed to work well with Win98 first edition but it has for two years -- and besides the notebook doesn't appear to be the problem.

Any ideas or fixes that we may have overlooked? I am at a loss....

The WLAN light is not lit?

It is not the poor laptop's fault, it is a router issue.

Enter the setup page for the Linksys router, usually at 192.168.1.1, with no username and a password "admin" without quotation marks. Write down the first page settings for your ISP connection. You will need these settings soon.

Find the reset button on the router, and find a convenient paper clip or pen that allows you to confortably hold in that button without interruption for nearly a minute. You will need this paper clip or pen in a moment.

Shutdown your computer.

Find the cable modem, and unplug its connection to the router. Then, unplug the modem from its power connection to the wall. (Using the on/off switch is not the same).

Now hold down the reset button on the router. Watch the front panel lights. The red diag light should eventually come on, the other lights should eventually flash several times, and then the red diag lite should go off. When it does, release the reset button and unplug the router power cord.

Wait at least a full minute. Plug the power cord back into the router. Plug the power cord back into the modem. Wait a full minute. Connect the modem again to the router. Now turn on your workstation again.

The first thing you need to do is to re-enter into the router setup page the information for your ISP.

Reboot your workstation and test your connection.
