I recently purchased this cable , Dsl router and I was able to have internet access to the two pc's in the house. ! is a win Xp home and the other is a win 2000 professional. Is it possible to create a LAN or workgroup so I can transfer the stuff off of the one pc. The cable internet works fine on both PC's but I am unable to network them. Any thoughts thanks

You most certainly can network them. They are connected by the common switch, and since their IPs come from the DHCP server on the router, you can be sure they are on the same subnet. Essentially you need to install the Client for Microsoft Networking, File and Printer Sharing, on both machines. You give each machine a unique computer name, and an identical Workgroup name.

There are many guides to the full steps, try this one:

bcaster is absolutly right.... just dont forget that once you have completed his instructions, you the need to go to the drive you want to be able to transfer files from and share it.... Open my computer, right click the drive you want to share, select the sharing option.... Usually at this point I click the "new share" button. give it an easy name (usually i will call it the same as the computer's network name followed by the drive letter.)

i.e. station1_C

Go to the other machine... follow bcasters directions again, and right click my computer and select map network drive... you can then browse the network for the share or type the UNC manually i.e. (\\name of PC with shared drive\name of shared drive)

For example: Computer Name = Station1
Drive Share name = Station1_C

In this situation, you would type in the unc as follows:

\\Station1\Station1_C

If any of the machines are running a software firewall, you may have to configure, lower, or disable the security levels to initially get your network to work. Once working you can then fine tune your firewall requirements.

A software firewall is always advisable and needed to control outgoing traffic even when you have a hardware firewall (nat router) running.
