BE NetWare 8.5 failure

I have been receiving three diferent errors when trying to backup a small Novell server to 4/8 Compaq drive (Compaq Proliant 1600 4GB HD). The system reports that 1) either the drive needs to be cleaned or a new tape inserted; 2)media failure 3 error during write filemark 6; or 3)a reset 8 during mount 19. Nothing on the device has changed,and was backing up without issue until the middle of last month. Now the tape sits after failing every night. I am beginning to suspect the drive may have gone bad because it does the same thing with new tapes. Any thoughts or suggestions, I have updated to the most recent version of software.
