BE 8.6 Email notification problem - Please help!

I'm using Backup Exec 8.6 for Win2k/NT and I've setup SMTP email notification. This worked fine for a while but then the email notification just stopped. Pressing the Test Notification button would also not send any email. The only way to start the email notification again is to reboot the server or stop and start the BE services. This works for a while but then stops again.

Does anyone know why the notification keeps stopping and if there is anything I can do about it? I have a similar setup at another site which has been working without problems.

Dumb question, did you:

a: re-apply latest service pack (assuming windows)
b: check the veritas website's knowledge base
