I have an NT4 server using BE7.3. For some reason tapes don't stay in the drive. I can switch to other tapes in the set and they all get ejected after a few seconds. I can't find anything in the documentation about this. Does this mean the tape is full? Is it a possible problem with the drive or the tape or both? BTW, how do I know how much the tape is used? I can't find anything about how you determine how tape is left.

1.When do the tapes eject? before a job is running? when the jobs kicks off?

If the issue happens while the Backup Exec job is running, have a look at the protection level in tools/options (Backup Exec) and properties of the media in the media set.

Try this,

Exit Backup Exec application
stop Backup Exec services
run NT Backup - does it still eject? If so there could be issues with drive/drivers etc.

2. Have a look at the media tab/reports/media for statistics.

It happens before a job even begins. When the tape is put in the drive, it will stay in there for a few seconds. I hear a few clicks and see some lights flashing then the tape ejects. I can't do the inventory in order to mount the tape. I can't recall the manufacturer of the tape drive. It's not my system. It belongs to a clients we service.

try moveing the meida to retired and do a full backup Greg

Try stopping the Backup Exec services and see if NT Backup can do a backup - this will determine if there is an issue with Backup Exec.
Let me know if it is Backup Exec, I have a few suggestions up my sleeve :)

you are probably putting in DDS level tapes that are not compatible w/ that drive. For instance, if you put DDS4 tapes into a DDS3 drive this will happen. The drive is seeing the tape as unrecognizeable media and is immediately ejecting it. If its taking more like 20-40 seconds then make sure the tapes aren't cleaning tapes.
