Hello!

Have build me first freeNAS server, and think it would be nice to use it for saving my paradox database. Have 2 computer where I installed my software and bde 5.2, and they read the databasefile from the server. And also set up the bde with ipadr to the freeNAS, but it is so SLOW!! Does anybody know some tips of making the BDE to work faster?? Copying files from the freeNAS with explorer is very fast!

TIA
Kåre!

oh please, do you have to use BDE/Paradox? This is the 21st century, there are so much better alternatives out there.

euh:
sql server
mysql
postgress
sqllite
firebird
...

these are the ones I work with on a daily basis.
And yes a NAS solution is a GOOD fileserver/backup solution, but a BAD database server.

oh and sorry for ranting :)

I realize this is an old thread. I just did a search on freeNAS here at tek-tips, and found it. I just (last week) set up an old computer with FreeNAS for back-up storage for my home network - haven't really used to potential yet, just tested with all old equipment - even the hard drives are 2 really old PATA hard drives.

Anyhow, I was thinking of setting up a test web server at home, and read where you can put that on FreeNAS. So, would I be better off with a separate machine, say with Ubuntu Server or SME Server installed instead of the same FreeNAS box? I'm not concerned with having enough hardware, as I've got loads of spare old PCs and parts at the house. I am thinking of using a machine that's just sitting there with an Athlon XP 3200+ CPU and what used to be an excellent mobo by Gigabyte.

Well, if I'm out of place asking that here, just ignore. [blush]

Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions. It's not anything I'll have time to do anything with other than dream until probably the end of May or early June. [sadeyes]
