Is the BDE capable across a LAN/WAN ?
All pcs can have the BDE installed.
Reading elsewhere it seems that the preferred solution is to use SQL. However, I'm more(a bit) capable with the BDE so is it feasible to go ahead with the BDE on a LAN and then WAN (we have two locations a few miles apart)?
I would use Paradox 7 but wouldn't be using cached updates as the info needs to be live and immediate.
Anyway, any guidance would be most welcome.

It is possible use the BDE / Paradox across a LAN but it is messy and in my experience requires quite a lot of maintenance and trouble shooting.

Paradox, like dBASE and Access is essentially a single user database for smallish amounts of data. It is possible to use them in a multi user environment but I would not recommend it.

You would be better off looking at something like MySQL which is free (subject to certain conditions) and has been designed to be multiuser and capable of handling vast amounts of data. I use MySQL on a LAN and I'm sure it can be used on a WAN.

Firebird, a free version of InterBase, is probably worth looking at but I have had little experience of it.

You can use SQL with Paradox but the SQL it supports is somewhat limited.

Ok, thanks for taking the time to reply.
I'll need to get the old manual out again and see what I need to employ MySQL.

Reading your reply further, I have Interbase that came free with Delphi 5 Enterprise. I started to use it but read somewhere that it wasn't suitable as a two tier database.
I seem to get different ideas everytime I read about different databases and a different chapter in the Delphi manuals.
