We have a single LAN, single subnet, single domain with 2 BDCs . We are in the precess of buidling another BDC with a view to promotion to PDC in order to upgrade to W2K single Domain Controler Active Directory.

This server seems to operating properly. It hosts our domain DHCP with no problem (NT4 SP6a).

It appears in Server Manager as a Backup server BUT the icon is grey NOT in color. SMS fails to recognize it as a BDC and refuses to update the SMSLogon folder. "ADDing the server" with the server manager gui fails as the server is "already a member of the domain."

What causes the server to appear grey instead of in color as our other BDCs do.? Will we messup DHCP operations if we ( in a non business operation period) "remove" the server from the domain and then ADD it again?

Any ideas??

Are you getting any event log errors on this server, mainly ones involving the Netlogon service? Make sure the Netlogon service is running on the new BDC. Also, you do have 1 PDC don't you? You indicated you had 2 BDCs.

If you haven't tried to Synch the Domain then do that first.

Removing the BDC from the domain should not affect it's ability as a DHCP server. You may need to remove it, resynch the domain, create it, and resynch the domain again.
