It helps, but I just used a pair of standard 2950 switches, and tried most of the layer 3 commands on a 2600 router, its not exactly the same, but helps as there is obviously stuff thats done different on a L3 switch than on a Router.
I'm not sure there is enough L3 topics covered on the BCMSN to warrant the expense of purchasing what will likely prove to be an expensive switch and/or IOS image.
It's a nice to have if you have the money but not essential. By far the biggest focus is still on a switch's L2 capabilities.
In my opinion its not really necessary because if you need hands-on practice in setting up some of the Layer 3 stuff (e.g. HSRP, GLBP, Intervlan routing), you can do all this on a router instead.
There is a caveat there though. Configuring intervlan routing on a router is a little different than on a switch but the concept is identical.
I admit I don't see the point, unless you have cash to burn, in trying to source a Layer 3 switch just for this exam. However if you planned to use it in production, proceed to CCIE studies or even sell it again - then maybe it's worth buying one.
