OK folks I have found all yalls info to be very helpful in the past and I finally made the plunge and joined.

I have one BCM50 that will not load patches. It went down due to the phsyical memory being full. I rebooted and cleared it's cache so its working now. It is a release 3 /Software version: 9.0.1.00.455
I have the most current Element Manager 6.0.0 updated straight from the box. Now it will load the patch, verify the patch and the pop-up window says that there are new updates found however, you can not see them to "select" them; the window is empty.

Now in the background on the bottom status bar there is what appears to be a command prompt window open stating Warning: The encoding 'utf-8' is not supported by Java Runtime.

Thanks ahead of time for your assistance!

you need to be running an old version of Java rel 5 i think not 6

also have the patches unzipped and in a temp folder on you C drive not the desktop... select software updates.. browse to the temp folder

if u have no patches loaded then load the software management patch first then let it reboot
then load the SU patch and re boot again.... then the desktop....

You need to load the correct patches for the software you are running on the bcm.
The software you describe is a release 5.
You also say it's rel 3.????????

Go to keycodes and check the software level.

Snowman50 it is a BCM50 Release 3 and in the next field is states that it is software version of the BCM is: 9.0.1.00.455.

Gibblett: I was trying to install BCM050.r300.SU.System-250.201009-1 This is unzipped and tried from C-drive (although the other customer BCMs will upload from desktop. I can not find a younger version on Java and being this is the newest BCM the customer has I updated to Java 6 update 24 all to no avail.

Thank you both for your responses.

Go to KEYCODES
Look at the information
Check the software version.
It will say release 5 on the left side
Read the information.

Don't look at identification
This will say bcm50 r3
Then the software version
If it starts with 9 then it's rel5.
The software will tell you the correct version

Version 6......is rel3
Version 9......is rel5
Version 10....is rel6

Another way to check the patches is to go to software update history
If you have any installed then you can see what version of patches have been installed

The system will not allow you to put a rel3 patch ona rel5 system

It will give errors as you have described

Thanks Snowman I was stuck on the fact that the System name stated that it was a R3. I found and scheduled the R5 SU patch and will cross my fingers that after the end of business today all will be right in the BCM50 world. Thank you so much for the tip!!
