Hello everyone,

I've got an old BCM50 that was originally sent to me as a version 1.0 that I upgraded to version 3.0 back in 2007. After upgrading, I installed it at the customer site.
Now the hard drive has failed and a new multi-image hard drive is scheduled to be delivered soon.
Question: after I install the new drive and putty in, should I select version 1 or version 3?

Thanks in advance, Lanny

If you have the upgrade license for 3.0 against that system ID, you should be able to apply the 3.0 image then restore the backup or load the keycodes.

Many thanks biv and firebird. The upgrade license for 3.0 is in the system keycode list and I've got a fairly recent backup of the file.

Another quick question - The times in the past that I've replaced failed hard drives, I've loaded the keycodes first then loaded the backup. Is this the preferable order or should the backup be loaded first, then the keycodes? I've seen both methods mentioned in the forum.

The method that I use is as follows

Power up the system and load in the keycode first. Reset the system so that is reboots with the active licences installed.

Patch up the BCM to the same patch releases or a later one if you don't have the older patch. Always follow the notes and generally speaking do the system patch first. The system patch tends to need a reboot and you must do this.

Be careful if your BCM system is an SRG as you might end up with IP Phone firmware problems if you have installed a system patch that is newer than what your system had.

I then always where possible install the Desktop patch and this rarely needs a BCM reboot. The desktop patch isn't essential unless you have RCC, but it won't do any harm to add it in as it's purpose is just to copy software onto the BCM's hard disk.

Once the patches have been installed, follow the process on restoring using your backup and this will require the BCM to reboot again.

I've found that if I just carry out a restore on a "clean" BCM without any patches, then on some versions I had a "Shadow" error that prevented me from loading in patches and I think I came across a keycode error once and I had to reimage the hard disk again.

I'm not saying that my method is the best way, but I can say that it is what I do to be sure that the restore is OK.

All the best

If it's working, then leave it alone!.
