I know that the question about an SSD that can be used as a replacement for the BCM50 hard drive came up several times on the BCM forum. Instead of replying to one of the old threads, I decided to create a new thread with a list of SSDs that are known to work.
EOL - pretty much impossible to find:
Intel X25-V (40 GB)
Intel X25-M (40 GB or 80 GB)
EOL - still available from Amazon/eBay to some extent:
Crucial V4 (64 GB or 128 GB)
The Intel drives use a proprietary Intel controller. The Crucial V4 drives use the Phison PS3105 controller. I never got any drive with a Sandforce controller recognized by the BCM50 mainboard. Hence, I decided to look for a Phison PS3105 based drive - the closest one I found (that is still being manufactured) is Corsair Force LS with Phison PS3108.
Earlier today I picked up 120GB Corsair Force LS from a local store - after cloning a BCM50 image to it, the BCM50 came up without a glitch! Even better - my perception is that it was up noticeably faster than when using a hard drive. In other words, there is another SSD compatible with BCM50.
Corsair Force LS (60 GB or 120 GB)
BCM50 images require a bit less than 40 GB of space - therefore the 60 GB Corsair Force LS is all you need if you want an SSD in your BCM50. At this time, you can get one for just $47 at Newegg:
