Hey all,

I am trying to find information on doing level 1 and level 2 resets for the BCM50 R5. It seems you can't use the pattented handy-dandy Nortel Paperclip...I mean Reset Tool anymore, and I know that they did away with the F9*8 access which in intself is lousy...but I digress, and I could really use some help on how to do the reset.

I have PUTTY from the BCM 3.0 but it doesn't seem to be working correctly...or more likely I am not doing something right.

Any and All help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Mike

use putty from the Application Manager and run it.

Enter the ip address of the BCM and login with the user name and PASSWORD.
SELECT software reset which does a level 2

it happens instantly when you select this.
The process takes about 15 minutes.

Ok...but the whole reason for the level 1 and 2 reset was that you could do it w/o having the username or password...allowed you to clear and clean it back to default.
With putty you're basically saying you're in the same S&*T you were in before without a clear way to access the unit. Is there another way aroud this or am I screwed?

get a copy of BCM50 Installation & Maintenance guide and goto page 164 it describes how to reset a BCM 50 using the reset button then follow the sequence as described.takes about 15 mins

Gibblett I appreciate your glibness, and I am familiar with the BCM, and it's foibles...the situation I came across was that the BCM50 5.0 didn't present the LED status like I would normally see for the level 1 & 2 reset.

I mean if it is still a usable option, then maybe the unit I have is really messed up!

So my question was more about whether the reset option is still available on this level, or if you can ONLY do it through the putty??? Sorry if I wasn't clear enough in my previous posting.

I found the exact same issue after I upgraded a BCM 2.0 to 5.0 - the LED sequence that signals when to push the reset button the first time is no longer shown after upgrade to Release 5.0

I found you coudl do it with a PuTTY session, but as has been said you need the password for that.

I guess there must be a new LED sequence. Does anyone know it?

Hey all,
Was still looking for any and all help on this one...is there still a way to do it using the LED status with the reset button?
Or if there is only the option of reset through the PUTTY...how can you do it without the Password, since if you have the password you wouldn't really need to do the Level 1 reset?
Thanks!

I see the new rel 6.0 documentation is on the Nortel website and still shows the same old diagram for pre-release 5.0 level 1 /2 resets.

I guess this is goign to involve a support call.

Curlycord I usually agree with you but this time you seem to be missing the point.

Forgive the short answer but if I had the user name and password I wouldn't be asking this question.

The whole luxury of the level 1 and 2 resets on the previous incarnations of the BCM50 was that if some knuckle head locked the systems up or an ex employee screwed with the system and changed the password you could wipe it out with a paperclip and go in fresh with either a backup or rebuild it.

What I am trying to find out is if this new "Better" version has a back door or something that will let you get around these situations. Or did NORTEL basically say the 2 words that aren't "thank you" and shut everyone out on these newer systems?

If anyone out there can say either yes and point me in the right direction or no your SOL I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Based on the info on page 95 it looks like you have to pay for the password on a BCM 50 now!

A way around this - albeit more long winded, would be to use Firebird Scramblers excellent disk image guide and restore a 'known' BCM 5.0 disk image to the hard drive.

You'd lose the config that way, but would do with a Level 2 reset too.

I am pretty sure I performed a level 2 reset on a BCM50 R5 in the last couple of months. I did it without thinking and just grabbed a paper clip.

Worked with no probs

What I meant was page 95 states your out of luck...however re-reading it seems as if your in programming according to screen shots to begin with but dont know the password, they dont make sense at all and not very clear.
I just assume if you dont change the "Trust no one" then they putty in with password of the day.
