Hi Guys,

Let me start by saying thank you for helping out. And secondly let me say I am one of those dangerous people with a Nortel BCM that doesn't know what he is doing too often.

I have a BCM50 in my home. I bought it used with an assortment of key codes. I got the system programmed and working with my old digital nortel phones, 2 door modules and an assortment of IP phones.

We had a power failure last week, and one of the thing that didn't fair well was my BCM.

It boots up and the bottom light goes to green but the top light stays amber. The IP address of the BCM is not pingable. None of the phones can reach the server, and the 7324 phones are all just blinking. Strangely the webgui IP is pingable, and the webgui function works, and it lets me adjust the network configuration of the BCM.

Someone has told me they believe it is the hard drive that failed in the BCM.

1) Does that sound like a reasonable assumption (hard drive failure)?
2) My system was R2.02.e - I see people online selling replacement drives with R5.0. Can I install a 5.0 drive and use the same license file with the key codes I got with my system? (License file with keycodes was from Jan of 2013)?

Thanks for the assistance!!!

Dave

You must purchase an upgrade key code (such as 2.0/3.0 to 6.0) and install it first before doing the upgrade.

Get a Rls 2 Hard drive and fire it up (if you know how)
Do a restore (if you had a backup)
Install key code for the upgrade
Upgrade (to 6.0 makes much more sense then 5.0)
Install 6.0 Factory Image patch (so in case same issue later you wont have to re-upgrade)
Backup system

Curlycord pretty much covered the bases. You can't put anything higher than a R2 hard drive in your BCM50. You will have to reload your current license file and then reprogram or restore programming. Then you can upgrade to a higher release with the purchase of an upgrade license.

What type of hard drive do you have?. If it's the original Maxtor 40 gig disk, then I'm told that often it's the circuit board that fails and that you can swap it out with another Maxtor board that works.

You might as well stick with the release 2.0 software and some of us do have Acronis images that fit onto a DVD for release 1.0 and 2.0 versions. I did a guide some time ago on how to restore a system.

Avaya has the hard disk images available for download in several spots on their website:

look for
BCM50_R2.part1.rar File size : 1,757,812 KB
BCM50_R2.part2.rar File size : 1,562,135 KB
After extracting you should have a 4GB file named BCM50_R2.tib

Use Acronis to image just about any off the shelf drive. Suggest smaller SSD drive like Intel 120GB or 180GB is a good choice.
Avoid 4k sector drives, you want regular old 512byte sector drive.
Avoid larger sized drives. The BCM only works with the first 128GB of space on the drive. Sorry, but treat these as legacy equipment, new model parts may not be the best choice.
I have the home edition of Acronis True image 2013 and it works fine to restore these images. They have dumbed down the latest versions as it is designed for home use so I avoid upgrading. Actually I often use an even older version I still have. If Acronis offers to make the partitions larger on a bigger drive just make sure to keep it under the 127GB barrier or you will have problems. I think going over the 128GB barrier is the usual point of failure so keep the partitions located on the lower 128GB side of the drive and leave any excess blank. Using the sector by sector option forces it to recreate the disk partitions exactly like the images 80GB drive base image. You do not need to use this option and you can resize the partitions to match your disk if you simply keep things under that 128GB limit.

As mentioned above, try to avoid the Acronis 2009 version as I couldn't get it to work with the Avaya images. It kept saying that the *.tib images were corrupted. Last week I managed to restore my release 6.0 system on the original 40 gig Maxtor drive using this method OK.
