BCM400 voicemail system doesn't begin to work until 6 hours post reboot

I've got a BCM400 that I installed several years ago (probably a 3.7 or a 4.0), and the customer just reported to me that the VM system doesn't work until about 6 hours after the system has been powered up. The customer consulted another vendor, and believes that the hard drive is getting ready to fail.

Anyone have any words of wisdom, or experience with this symptom?
