BCM400 Boot Up Time?

I have a BCM400 r4. It's new and I haven't put it into service yet. I can get into the configuration with Element Manager no problem.

But anytime I reboot the system it takes at least an hour, sometimes longer, for the system to boot to the point where I can access it. The rest of the time I get an error concerning the BCMDetector (or whatever.)

I can check the Alarms and I see intervals every 10 minutes where some service "stops" and then 10 minutes later a bunch start successfully and then one stops and there is another 10 minute pause. Don't know if that has anything to do with anything.

Should it really take 1-2 hours from a warm or cold boot for the system to get to a point where I can use the Element Manager?

Thanks!

Should have booted within 10 minutes completly..

Open it up and check all connections and cards are seated properly..

Do A LEVEL 2 to factory reset..

or do a restore from BACKUP RESTORE to factory settings via element manager.

Thought so. Is the L2 reset called the "cold boot" in the Element Manager? I already did that once to no avail. I have no backups since it's a new system. I do have the restore CDs with the .GHO files.

I suspect I did not shut it down gracefully once and it is now doing this. Any merit to this theory?

BCM 4.0 is the same as bcm50 .
Factory reset can be done via element manager.
its under BACKUP RESTORE and select restore.
select factory.
It resets it back to OUT OF THE BOX.

I'm on it right now!! Will report back and star assigning stars shortly. :)

Ok, that did not help. I did it twice (unnecessary, I know.) I started a reboot at 145am and it didn't complete to the point I could get into the config w/ element manager until 315. So 1h 30m to boot 100%.

The service that is always starting and stopping is "IP TERMINAL SERVICE (UTPS)."

It goes something like this... a bunch of services load successfully then the IP Terminal Service stops unexpectedly. Then nothing happens for precisely 10 minutes. Then a bunch of other services load quickly until the IP Terminal Service stops again. Wait 10 minutes, and then more services come up. This goes on for 90 minutes until it stops unexpectedly for the last time. It's like the system just gives up.

You didn't say how old the system actually is or where you got it but if you reset it to factory default, you really should patch it with the latest service update first, then see how long it takes. They fixed a lot of crap in these things over the last year or so.

If I recall, some of the older systems were released to the field with beta software in them as well. You might have one of those. If you do, best bet is to get a replacement drive and start over, or if you have a copy, re-image it with the bit tool.

I actually put the latest patches from Oct 2009 on there (System & Desktop) but it didn't help.

It's a RAID system, but I do have the .GHO files so I suppose I could reimage them. The system was new but it only had latest patches to Dec 2007.

I am going to upgrade to r5 prior to deployment so I'm hoping that between a reimage and going to r5 would solve me problem.

Anyone seen a problem like I mentioned above?

Try taking the RAID card out & boot up using only one drive at a time. You could have a bad RAID card or a bad drive.
