I have proceeded with my first BCM upgrade on my way to 4.0. I have BCM400 3.5 Upgrade software package and keycode present for 3.7.
Here's how it goes:

Prepare BCM for Upgrade ----- Complete
Transfer Files to BCM ------- Complete
Expand Files to BCM --------- Complete
Updat Bios ------------------ Complete
Operating System Update ----- Complete
Swap Act & Inac Partitions -- Complete
Data COnversion ------------- Complete
Bcm Initialization ---------- Progress 78%
(where by trouble's begin.)

Basically system hangs here for a really long time ( more than an hour). I rebooted.... why I don't know
and when I restarted upgrade I was stuck. I can no longer gain access.
Can someone please advise?

What Do I Do from here??

This is for use in UK but general procedure should be the same

1. Open Hyper terminal session on your PC

IN CONNECTION DESCRIPTION NAME IT BCM AND PICK AN ICON
IN PHONE NUMBER CHECK CONNECT USING IS DIRECT TO COM 1
IN COM 1 PROPERTIES CHECK PORT SETTINGS
BITS PER SECOND 9600
DATA BITS 8
PARITY NONE
STOP BITS 1
FLOW CONTROL HARDWARE

2. If the BCM is ready you will then be prompted to log in.

user name: ee_admin
domain: (leave blank just press return)
password: XXXXXXXXXX depending on HDD

3. You will then be presented with a menu, press1 to select “Platform
Initialisation Menu”.

From the “Platform Initialisation Menu” choose option 1 - “Initialise Menu”

From the Initialise Menu” choose option 1 - “Initialise Universal Profile” and the wait a short time for the next menu to appear

From the “MSC Initialisation Menu” choose option 3 – depending on HDD version this maybe “E1 MSC LOAD” for 3.01 and 3.5 and “UK MSC E1” for 3.6
Again depending on the HDD version the leds on BCM will flash in a particular way. For 3.01 and 3.5 all Leds will flash green and for 3.6 you will see the Power flash red then the Temperature followed by the Fan and other leds will be green or out.

During this stage the BCM will upload the necessary files and core and will do various reboots, when you have all leds showing steady green it has completed. The whole process should be completed within 30-40 minutes.

SORRY..SORRY BCM400guy

I sent this info to the WRONG post

PLEASE IGNORE ABOVE POST INFORMATION.

Personally, I would do 1 of 2 things:

1) Reimage back to 3.5 then do a restore and start upgrade again

2) call Nortel and get their assistance

Snowman I already tried null modem access and somehow did exactly what you said in your 1st post before you posted it. went to get a cup of coffee and when I returned I no longer have null modem access now. I can ping unit successfully but thats it.

Thanks DBrewsky. New image seems to be the only way I can see to proceed at this point.

Does anyone have a 3.5 image? I could use it right about now.
Any other ideas are welcomed.

Had the same problem w/ a 3.5 to 4.0 upgrade. Upgrade to 3.6 went okay but got hung going from 3.6 - 4.0. Ended up replacing the HD w/ a 3.6 HD did a restore and then proceeded w/ the upgrade.

Null modem cable actually still works. Cable was discon at base of computer in rack. I reran the Initialization and waited patiently. System boots as a 3.7 build 2.4f Int status complete init at 6.2, Blue NT Screen with dots when conected to VGA. Passes all diagnostic self tests in good standing. HD passes as well. What's the problem? Ping ok at 10.10.10.1 -- Only null modem access at this point. Can anyone provide a 3.7 image? I think this is what I need but I don't really know. help please, anyone.

You need the Apache fix patch. This is a well known problem. You should be able to get it off the Nortel website. If not, let me know. I can email or ftp it to you.

FYI original install was successful. due to Install after Jan 2008 caused weird apache certificate failure. Apache fix patch corrected issue by updating apache SSL certificate and allowing the connection through UM. Special Thanks to emillysdad. It saved me big time!!

Software Update Name: Apache_Tool_Wizard

Applicable H/W Platforms: BCM1000, BCM200, BCM400, SRG200 1.0, SRG400 1.0

Applicable S/W Platforms: BCM 3.6, SRG 1.0 based on BCM 3.6

Category: GEN

Installation Recommendations: This tool can be used with all BCM 3.6 systems,
as well as SRG 1.0 systems based on BCM 3.6, which have lost access
to Unified Manager because of a security certificate failue. This occurs when these
systems are initialized after January 2008, which results in Apache service failure.

Description:
-----------
The following issues are addressed:

1. A tool to provide OpenSSL/Apache fix
A failure in dynamic certificate creation is causing Apache to fail during
BCM initialization. There is a limitation with the OpenSSL tool where the
certificate generation fails thus preventing the access by Unified Manager.

This has now been fixed by modifying the scripts that use the OpenSSL tool.
This fix is delivered via a utility application that performs the following tasks:

1. Remotely enable the FTP service on the BCM system.
2. Transfer the required scripts for execution on BCM system.
3. Regenerate valid Apache certificates and re-start the Apache service.
4. Disable the FTP service on the BCM system.
