BCM Upgrade fails from 3.5 to 3.6

Hello folks

I've got myself into a bit of a mess, whilst trying to upgrade my BCM up to 3.6.

My upgrade on my Version 3.5 BCM 1000 failed during the upgrade at around 28%. I'm now unable to talk to the BCM via either the 2 LAN ports or even by using the serial comm port. I've hooked up a Monitor & keyboard to the front of the BCM to try & see what has happened!.

I can see the boot up screen & I can select either one of two options.

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt = "Business Communications Manager 3.0" /NODEBUG /NoSerialMice

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\winnt = "Maintenance OS" /NODEBUG /NoSerialMice

The BCM one gets me to a message "Winnt\System32\Config\SYSTEMHardware Profile / Last Known Good menu" error.
I know that the Hard disk is ok, as I've tested it on another p.c. as a extra drive.

Do I have a corrupted file, or do I have to reload the 20 gig hard drive using a mirror image from another system ( Which I'm lucky in that I can get access to another 3.5 BCM system!)

I would hope that I could get away with changing one of the "NT4" / BCM start-up files?.

Any clues or advice would be grateful please.

I had that problem last night, what I did was start the upgrade again and it worked OK. Hve you done an upgrade before?

Thanks for the reply. I can't restart the upgrade because I'm not able to even ping the BCM. The phones however work fine.

I did a full reboot by switching the BCM off for a minute at the mains before turning it back on again. I even tried doing a reboot via the M7310 by selecting the reboot option.
I've been looking at the 20 Gig disk at home & the disk is split into 4 partitions. It appears to be in order & I think that the BCM software is selected via one of the partitions at power-up.

I'm going to guess that the upgrade failed during the file transfer process of the upgrade (probably hit 400MB or so transferred from disk 1 before it failed?)

I've been bitten by this before. It's a good idea to run the upgrades from your hard drive (copy the 2 CD's to your hard drive first and run startup.bat from the folder where you copied the disk 1 files). Sometimes you'll get a read error from the CD, or have a bad disk.

Worst part about the upgrade is it does the "destructive" stuff before the file transfer.

The only way I found around this was to install a different hard drive and do a restore. Hopefully you've got a hard drive that has the 3.5 software on it, and a good backup.

Thanks for the message. Things went from bad to "very bad" today as I lost access to the systems BIOS. I kept getting the message "Entering setup". Even changing the small pin over from "config" to "bios" did not improve it.
The answer in the end was to remove the motherboards battery & that took me back into the Bios section. I cleared & reset some of the settings before rebooting again. I did get a message telling me to put the pin back to "config" at power down.
Anyway it's now showing the "Intel" splash screen on power up before I get to the original BCM / Winnt OS prompt. I may have to check if I should get hold of a later Bios version, although it should not have changed!. It's been a useful excercise doing this. I'm just glad it's only my lab system & not a customers!.
