Customer has a redundant BCM 400 3.7 system. The BFT had to be replaced as well as the hard drives. The customer is wanting to put in 4.0 hard drives instead of 3.7. I was told by our senior engineer that an MSC upload had to be performed and once the hard drives go in Nortel had to be contacted to complete the upload. Is this correct?

U need to generate keycodes into the 4.0 format. U'll have to repgm the system as u won't be able to use your backup since u not going thru the proper upgrade procedure (upgrade kit).

When u install new HDs u have to initialize them via a serial cable using the com port. Don't think Nortel needs to be involved.

Thats a new one on me. You can put in a new 4.0 hard drive but you will have to initialize it properly. That may be what he is referring to. If it is equipped with Raid, leave the secondary disconnected until you're done. Once everything is initialized, just plug the secondary in and let it copy from the primary. Once that's done, you will have to reprogram the box from scratch as you cannot use any 3.X backups on the 4.0 system. You will have to migrate the keycodes too. Presently KRS will have you registered as a 3.7 and they will need to be regenerated as 4.0 to be able to upload them.

You might be able to regenerate them without the migration keycode if your current system is not registered with KRS, but you would have to try that yourself. I've never tried that myself.

From what I understand now is that there is a high failure rate of the MSC core upload when going from 3.X to 4.0 by HDD replacement. That is why Nortel gets involved. There is a solution detail on it called "BCM 4.0 HDD replacement on BCM 2.x or 3.x system: cannot get MSC to load and nnsupport password does not work."

Sometimes yes and sometimes no.
Its about 50/50.
The 4.0 HDD will initialize on its own.
When it completes, if you don't see anything in the Telephony folder, call Nortel and they can do the core upload, or you can run a Cold boot and start from scratch.

Or, after replacing the HDD, install the latest SU and it will force the core upload.Good trick to know.

Yes, thanks all for your help. Friday night will be the night I dive into this.
