Friend who has BCM400 rel 3.6 without expansion chassis. Currently has following modules:
DSM32+ in bay 1
Fiber Expansion Module (with 2 digital and two analog station modules (daisy-chained) connected - total of 3 fibers in use) in bay 2
Digital Trunk Interface in bay 3
Digital Trunk Interface in bay 4

Doesn't use IP phones at this time, but may in the future.
Question is - keeping trunks the same, what is the maximum number of additional digital stations that he can add (with expansion chassis)?
What is the relationship between the max number of digital and max number of IP phones?
Thanks. Mike

None. You're full now.

There are six DS30 loops on the BCM. Each DTM uses a DS30 bus. Your DSM-32 uses a DS30. Each active port on the FEM uses a DS30. That's six.

You could remove the digital stations from the FEM card - you have 32 phones on those two loops, 16 per loop when using a FEM/Norstar station module. You could replace those with DSM32+ cards for 64 total phones on those loops. You'd need an expansion cabinet to accomodate those cards though.

No real relationship between the maximum number of digital and IP phones in your config. You probably won't be able to drop down to a 3/5 DS 30 split due to the TDM requirements. Without knowing the exact config of how many voicemail ports you have active, you could get somewhere in the neighborhood of 40-50 IP sets on the system.

Thanks for the reply!

Follow up:
- When the brochure says that they can have up to 192 digital stations, that's only if they have no trunks?

- One document I saw said BCM400 has 8 DS30 loops. Are two in use for internal or did I just read wrong?

- Is there such a thing as BCM1000? I've seen odd references to it, but nothing hard.

- Is there another expansion path for this guy that won't require a forklift?

Thanks!

1. Yes. 192 digital stations if there are no trunks.

2. It does. Two are reserved for the data/IP side of the system. Three can be reserved if configured for a 3/5 split.

3. Yes. That was the first generation BCM. It has three module slots in the main cabinet. 1000 was a carryover from the Enterprise Edge 1000 name.

4. Short of getting rid of the Norstar digital station modules, not really.

One more... how many bay slots does the expansion chassis provide?
