I have an BCM 1000. I recently installed a T1 card in the main cabinet ot go along with 2 4 port analog trunk modules. I moved a 32DSI card down to the newly connected expansion cabinet. I made up a 16 ft. straight thru cat 5 cable as I could not find the Nortel one. Every morning when I come in, all the sets are flashing. I unplug the DS256 cable and re-seat it and sets all come up and work all day. Next morning, same thing. Do I need the Nortel cable or could it be something else?

It could be the cable. I've seen the expansion cabinets do strange things when the Nortel cable isn't in place. It's a shielded cable, so there's a signal ground between the main cabinet and the expansion.

I did run across a flaky MSC card once that exhibited similar symptoms. Replacing the MSC fixed that problem. I have a feeling that may have been caused by someone connecting a live LAN port to the DS-256 connector at one point in it's life.

Part number for the DS-256 cable is NTAB3304. If you have shielded cable and the proper ends, you could try making one and see if that helps.

Thank you BIV343. would you have the pin-out for the shielded cable. Mine is not shielded. Thanks

Straight through, make it the same as you'd make an ethernet patch cord.

As steeef says, it needs to be exactly 5 meters - the length has an effect on the timing between the main cabinet and the expansion. Longer or shorter and it'll do odd things.
