Cisco is popping up everywhere, including Mom and Pop businesses as well. The 79xx series phones look pretty professional and operate almost identically to a Nortel PBX set such as the 11xx and 12xx on a SIP platform, but the Linksys/Cisco phones are uninspiring and cheap....they seem to be of residential grade quality.

I will keep playing with my BCM's as long as I can keep them going. Maybe one day when an IPO7 is more affordable for a novice like me, I'll pick one up and try it out. I am curious to see how the 11xx and 12xx work on the SIP platform on the IPO7. I bet the Nortel keyclicks are gone..replaced with standard DTMF tones.

I heard that the Loudspeaker paging setup on the IPO7 isn't as easy as the BCM? Is that true? I heard you have to buy a separate paging controller by Valcom or Viking in order to page to overhead speakers. Does this mean that Feature 630 will no longer be able to page through the phone speakers and overhead speakers at the same time? Sounds like a backwards step to me!

I've hooked up many IPO systems to external paging. I haven't had any issues. I do miss the aux ring port in the BCM, as I've had to use a Viking analog station to dry contact adapter more than once to make overhead ringing function.

The feature codes for paging didn't make it to the IPO. You can program a shortcode to page external and through the sets at the same time. Program a dial paging shortcode of *630 or whatever you want and it works. Not much different than it was before if you don't mind pressing * instead of Feature.

I've worked on BCM since it was called Enterprise Edge. I'm finding the IPO more flexible to program. Being able to build a config file offline or have the customer email the config for review is priceless to me. The embedded voicemail could use some more polishing, but it does what the smaller customers want it to do. It seems to price out competitively as well.

I wouldn't worry. 10 years from now this forum will most likely still be active with questions about BCM. :)

Thank you for the reassurance biv.

I've also been playing around with 11xx sets on SIP format. I finally found a way via Michael McNamara's Avaya blog, to disable the extended feature set on my 1140/1120 SIP sets and I use a SIP 1120/1140 on VOIP.MS centrex SIP trunking. I like the CLID and Ringtone features of the SIP sets compared to the BCM, so I assume that the 11xx sets operate similarly on the IPO7 as they are using the same firmware I am using. Is that correct? I sure would have been a happy camper if Avaya would have rolled the SIP phone feature into the BCM! A friend who designed BCM's told me they were testing it for RLS6.0, but they scrapped for IPO7!

With the 11xx sets operating on SIP under IPO mode, do you get the familiar Nortel short clicks or does it use Standard DTMF tones?

Also, is the paging port on the IPO7 as simple as wiring a pair of telco wire between the Server and the Amplifier?

Thank you again for your reassurance and happy message.

I haven't paid attention to whether there are clicks or tones when pressing buttons. I'd have to fire the phone up and see what it does next time I'm in the office. The ringtones are there, I do remember that. The SIP phones on IPO run a different SIP load than the MCS or CS1K systems. You get BLF functionality and a feature key with the IPO load. I think its 4.0.13.

I upgraded a BCM 50 to release 6 the other day and saw some SIP client stuff in element manager. I was wondering if its possible to run a SIP pphone on a BCM 50 now. I don't think I would run an 1140 in SIP mode on a unistim capable call server however. 1140s are too expensive to dumb down to a SIP feature set if you don't have to in my opinion.

IPO page ports are analog station ports programmed as a paging speaker interface. Some amps don't provide the right impedance to the IPO, so the control unit will put the port out of service. If you run into that, put a 600 ohm resistor across tip and ring on the page port and the problem is solved.

I miss the amphenol connectors when working on an IPO. I prefer those over piles of RJ45 jacks on an IPO.

Another nail in the box!.

Hi Biv,

When you get a chance, let me know about the keyclick on the IPO 11xx sets, I am curious. Being a designer full time, I am into the little nitty gritty details of things.

So I've pretty much maxed out all the things I can do with my BCM in my home lab, I am torn between getting a CS1000 mini or IPO7....I supposed I can find a fully loaded CS1000 fairly cheap on the secondary market..

I am waiting for my fist IPO r7 for my lab .It is time to move on if we want to salvage our customers' T and M handsets.

I fired up the 1140 on the IPO. No key clicks, just DTMF tones. A potential upside for you is the ability to load WAV files as ringtones should the Nortel canned tones not suit you.

Interesting about the keyclicks.....or as the CS1000 terminology calls them "short clicks". All of you guys probably wonder why I ask such mundane details....

I remember being a teen in the early 1990s and I just started getting interested in all these "new" Norstar systems popping up everywhere from Walgreens to Kmart to TJMaxx to Borders stores. I would hear people dial with those futuristic sounding clicks on the Handsfree, not to mention the ring tones, paging tone (then it was the triple tone DR1-DR3. I thought it was quite cool, being the dork I am, haha :)

Then when I actually started my high school job as a Walgreens clerk, I was able to use the Norstar phones for my job and I fell in love with the Nortel product. I was used to like to screw with people by changing Feature 62 to Feature 630, or change their phone to Spanish, etc....haha. Then I went on to Purdue and during my Sophmore year we upgraded to an SL-100 and the head of telecom hired me to work in the department. So I bleed Nortel blue....unfortunately, the company I work for is going all Cisco in our stores now! We won an award from NT for buying the most Nortel phones ever once.

Biv,

I don't notice T series phones on Avaya's website. Have those been discontiuned as well?

I work in the retail industry and many large national retail chains use the BCM50/450....what the HECK are they going to do now if the T series are discontinued and they upgraded to IPO7 and that is what all of their store employees are trained for? Does that mean they are going to have to buy 11xx or 12xx IP phones for all of their stores if they want to use the IPO Norstar feature set?

As far as I know you can still order T series phones and you should be able to until the EOS date is reached. They're like 2616's. I'm sure you'll be able to buy them on the reman market for years to come.

But yes, if you want the Norstar/BCM feature set, you need to use a Nortel branded telephone.
