I'm looking at upgrading my CICS to BCM50 so that I can add on a couple of IP sets at remote locations.

Once question I have is whether or not I will need to purchase additional VPN software to be able to do this?

The package I was quoted includes 2 IP set licenses which I understand will need to go through VPN to work remotely, however, no clarity on whether or not I need additional software/licenses to set this up.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Shawn,
Will your remote sites be connected to your main site via internet or a dedicated point to point data connection?

Next question,

Will you be putting the BCM outside(exposed to the internet) or inside your network(behind a firewall)?

Nevermind my previous question. You can order I2050 softphones w/Plantronics USB Headsets and then when your remote user performs their VPN access to the network with their computer they can activate their I2050 phone from the desktop.

Thanks - but I'm not sure that will help.

Here's the scenario:

Small business - 4 lines - working out of my home office -

I'd like to be able to work remotely - and set up an IP set at that location.

Home internet is your basic 10Mbps down - 1Mbps up - terminated on wireless 4 port router -

I want to be able to connect the BCM50 to it and use an IP set from the cottage.

Hope this helps.

Shawn

As long as you are able to ping the BCM ip address from anywhere on the internet, then you can add an Ip phone anywhere in the world that has internet access. One way to do this is to use routable static ip addresses from your internet service provider(s) on both sides of the equation.

The remote IP Phone has to be able to "see" not only the BCM but as well as any IP Phone in the office since voice packets flow directly between the two IP Phones.

I guess if you want to have an ip set at your cottage, that you have an internet connection up there. Technically you can connect your ip set directly to it and run it with an external ip address but that is stronly discouraged by Nortel (and most vendors) due to the inherent security risk.

As for what you need in the bcm, you have it already. Just ip client licenses are required. The preferred method of connecting the ip set remotely is to set up a proper VPN. There is nothing you need in the bcm to do that (unless you plan on using the A or E model). Once your VPN is established, your set should register and come on line provided it is configured correctly.

For the VPN, any decent vpn routers will do. If the ones you have at home and cottage aren't vpn capable, you will likely have to replace them. One that does work (once you get them configured) is the Nortel BSR222 box. Before anybody jumps down my throat.....I know they can be tough to configure, but once they're done, they seem to work trouble free.

I've set up lots of these and they work great.
