Hey Tek-tips,

I have been told by my boss(30+ year nortel tech) that upgrading from BCM50e r1.0 to r6.0 is a lengthy and problematic process. I guess the last two times we tried it the hard drive got corrupted some how and we had to buy a new HDD and start from scratch.

Is this a common problem... Everyone at my office is telling me it's not worth the risk and that I should propose a new system.

Thoughts?

To upgrade from release 1.0 to 6.0, you will need to upgrade to 3.0 first. It does take an hour or more to do and you will need to have the keycodes to enable you to do it, but I guess you have them already if you have tried a previous upgrade.

It's best to check what type of hard disk you have as the earlier Maxtor ones at 40 Gigs were troublesome. What reason do you have for upgrading to 6.0?. Is it for more features?.

The BCM system is near to end of it's life, so it's a good question about upgrading, although I hear that the UCX version of the BCM range is a good replacement as you already have the BCM unit and phones.

All the best

Hey buddy,

Thanks for your reply

The reason were upgrading is so we can introduce IP softphone clients on windows 7/8 PC's. The hard drive on there system failed about 6 months ago and was replaced at that time. Would I be safe in assuming the new HDD will be suitable for this upgrade or should I verify before hand.

I've proposed a new system but want to cover all angles

I've got a BCM 50 at release 2.0 that I have connected up to the internet all the time. I also have Version 2 2050 soft phones that work fine with Windows 7 32 bit. As far as the hard disks go, stay away from the Maxtor ones. The later Seagate 80 Gigs were much better.

I'm guessing that the keycodes at release 1.0 don't have your IP soft phone licences?.
