can you use the backup from one system same release to another or is their a serial number attached to the backup?

You can restore as you want as long as the new BCM has the same or newer patches.

If the system has expansion modules do you need to connect them up first to restore or can you just load backup on the newer main chassis after installing the patches. thank for your time

Follow up to curlycord? I can restore a R3 database to an R6 system? Haven't tried but willing to do so.

You cannot do a restore directly onto a different BCM release, only to the same release.

Yes you can restore without the expansion cabinet being attached.
