we have a bcm 50 with 2 expansion cabinets, one is a 8 cct gatm, the other cabinet is a dsm32+. If the system loses power it will reboot except for the 3rd cabinet with the dsm32+. a simple pull of the power cord out and back in will restart it. shall we replace power supply, cabinet or dsm32+ or all three? we have 25-30 tels on the DSM32.

system is R3 and patched with:

BCM050.R300.SU.System-270.201205

which I assume is up to date.

can you (or anyone else) think of a situation where the cabinet and the dsm32+ produces a static like noise on the phones on the card. Trunks test good whenever I go there. No logs in the system to indicate a problem.

You could try swapping over the power leads from both expansion cabinets to see if the fault moves, then do the same for the cabinets, but change over the modules inside each expansion cabinet.

There wouldn't be a need to reboot the BCM main unit.
I'm assuming that the patch cables go direct from the BCM main unit to each of the expansion ones?.

BCM50 expansion cabinets are supposed to be connected by a shielded Cat5e cable of a specific length (3 feet I believe). If you use a cable that is not shielded or of a different length, noise could be introduced or the timing might be off - bit errors could sound like noise.

I think one of the patch cords isn't shielded. I am going to replace DSM32 and Trunk card. The trunk card generated this alarm:

eventID=35; message=Core Telephony - Media Bay Module firmware download failure.; problemResolution=Reboot the BCM. If the problem persists, power down the system and check the expansion chassis connections. Check for corresponding alarm 31 or 79 to determine which module is having issues. If problem persists replace corresponding hardware.
<information> 2018-04-03T11:55:20.811214 bcm50 CORE [1653]: eventID=55; message=Core Telephony - Media Bay Module firmware download complete.; problemResolution=No Action Required.

it seems to be working fine, I am not certain if that is part of a normal boot up procedure.

Would placing ferrite cores on the 25 pair aid at all? We used to put them on Mitel 25 pairs.

Non shielded patch cord found in use. Replaced it and the cabinet and power supply.

Just an update, this problem re-occurred. They lost power and the 3rd cabinet with the DSM32+ will not re-sync with the processor. The DSM32+ was replaced and the cabinet was replaced. Also a large UPS was put in place but we still lost power. A reboot of the 3rd cabinet clears the problem. But we shouldn't have to reboot?

You say when when you lose power it will not reboot, yet when you unplug the cord from the BCM it will reboot?

Can you test by cutting the power to the 3 power supplies and wait 2 minutes then plug them all back into the UPS again?

Some Power Supplies will return a little juice when unplugged....maybe the culprit.

As for the other issue with static is it only external calls?

Maybe the issue is with the main cabinet or it's expansion RJ45 port.

To be clear power is restored to all three but the phones attached to the DSM32 will just flash. We have to reboot that cabinet to get them to sync up with the main unit. Both the DSM32, the cabinet and the power supply were replaced. We did not change the KSU.

If we must replace the KSU, can I do a backup of the KSU and then dump that programming to a different KSU/BCM50 or must I reprogram from scratch?

This is what I did get out of it.

How are you rebooting it
Does the power go out for several minutes or more? enough time to let the PS's drain any remaining power?

For backing up the BCM you can restore it to another BCM if:
-same release #
-same patches on the new BCM or higher

Key codes would need to be migrated with KRS from one system ID to the other only if not enough codes on the new one...this is where a modified BCM (or modifier) comes in handy.

I don't know how long the power outage lasts. A reboot is just pulling the power connector from the cabinet wait and then back in, phones usually re-sync and back in business. will it matter if I swap the expansion ports that I use for the DSM32 and the GATM?

I do not think it will matter as long as you reconfigure them in Resources but maybe somebody else can confirm.

Try unplugging the PS from the wall instead next time just for kicks.

An update...

Power cycling the expansion cabinet did not result in any change. phones continued to flash.

Only after power cycling the main cabinet while leaving the expansion cabinets powered were we able to restore service. I don't know if that is a pending hdd problem or some other type of problem. All cabinets are on a good UPS.

It's a BCM 50e, if I replace it with a regular BCM 50, at the correct revision, will that be a problem?
