I have a bcm50 release6 that keeps resetting once a week. I have replaced the power supply moved the power cord, updated the system to the most current update and it's still powering down. I am thinking hardrive. But am not sure. I don't want to see the customer pay for something that doesn't fix the problem. A new system would be my suggestion, unless someone knows it's the hardrive,And has had success by swapping the hardrive. Thanks

The first question would be what do you see in Alarms?

If the BCM itself is ok then there should be no issues swapping the hard drive.

Crazy thought but make sure somebody did not schedule a reboot during the wrong hours.

The alarms just show when it restarted. It doesn't show why it restarted. Can you schedule a reboot for once a week? It has been about every 8 days. My only thought about the hard drive is that the money they spend could be used toward a new system. But if it is the harddrive that would definitely be cheaper.

You can schedule reboots that's why I said to check but since alarms do not show it then it's not scheduled.

I am guessing at $300 to $500 for a hard drive with software loaded on it.
Of load an image yourself.

Doing a Level 2 reset and restoring programming from a backup would be something to try.

Or if you go into Restore and restore from factory default then do a restore.

Both the above might clear any corruption.

You can buy an SSD compatible drive and load in a factory image using Acronis 2010 and this would improve the system.

Make sure you have a couple of backups first and keep a copy of the keycodes.

Ok thanks for your help. I will try a new hardrive. I have had a similar problem with a release 3 but that one was resetting every day sometimes twice. A level 2 reset did not fix the problem. I ended up swapping out the unit with a spare system I had.

If the hard disk is a Maxtor 40 gig, then it is very likely that this will be the cause of many problems as the later Seagate 80 gig drives were much better.

I did a guide on using a serial port for the BCM 50 and this can be useful in watching the boot up events and even doing the check disk option. Look in the FAQ section for the link.

Few questions
Can I get the harddrive info without taking it apart. Has anyone replaced a harddrive with an ssd harddrive and it works. If so is there any documentation on it. And firebird do you have a link to the serial port documentation for a bcm 50. I know I have to order a special serial cable. Thanks

Try this link to obtain the serial port guide

or you can use and look for it in there.

As for SSD drives, I use one that is mentioned in the guide. It's been attached here for you.

full details are an Intel X25-M
SSDSA2M080G2GC 80GB 2.5" MLC SATA SSD. This was housed in a red 1Pc 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor
Bracket SSD HDD Notebook Mounting Holder Tray Caddy Bay. The only moving part left is the fan!.

You can find the model number of the hard drive without opening the BCM.

In element manager go to Administration->General->Hardware Inventory and you will see the model number of the drive in the Resource field.

Mine shows "ST380815AS" which if you pop that into google shows that it's a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST380815AS 80GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive.

Ok thanks for all your help. When I swap the harddrive out. I will post an update if it fixed the problem or not.

I am in the process of getting all the stuff to clone a hard drive and I came across 1 issue. the system is a release 6 and i had the customer check the hard drive and found that it was a ST3160318AS. It comes up as an 160GB with 8 Mb of cache. Should i use a SSD of the same size? can i use any brand?
Thanks

Only certain SSD drives will work. The minimum size is 40 gigs, but I've used a 250 gig SATA drive OK and I would expect that others have used even larger size disks without any problems.

The important thing is to get a few current backups done first and then get it up to release 6.0 on anither drive, but install the keycode once it has powered up and then the latest system patch which requires a reboot.

Apply the other patches such at the desktop and the 3 smaller patches (Which require a reboot for each one).

Finally do a restore using a backup that you have taken. This should give you a clean rebuild.

If you load in your backup first, then there is a chance that you will bring in corruption if your existing system already had patches installed.

For a list of compatible SSDs, look at the FAQ - Compatible SSD Drives:
For all BCM50 images, you need 40 GB - the rest is just unused space. The only exception is the BCM multi-image hard drive, which uses more space initially, but gets converted to 40 GB when you select a specific release.
