BCM 50 R3 Stuck in reset mode

Hi,
I have a site where we lost admin access to the BCM 50. I used BCM Monitor and saw that the CPU was running at 100%, after a couple of days it was still the same. We planned a re boot after work and the system failed to re start. We tried a level 1 reset. After the process was completed the system still would not boot ( leds indicated solid yellow, flashing yellow then started over). We then tried the level 2 reset, after pressing the reset sequence and waiting 45 minutes, the system never finished ( red flashing led). OK, new hard drive needed. I ordered the multi image HD from Avaya. When it arrived,I installed it and was ready with my PUTTY client to start the disk menu format for rls.3.
However, the BCM50 is still in reset mode (red solid LED , Amber flashing LED then red flashing LED). I am thinking that , if I had the BCM50 rls 3 image, I could load it onto a hard drive and get the BCM 50 to finish the reset mode. I was able to get these files on the Nortel site in the past, but am having problems with partner levels on the Avaya site.
Any ideas?

Thanks, Nortech1

Hi Curlycord,
Thanks for the reply.
I have the manuals and have tried the factory reset. Both LED's are : Solid red then both flashing red. ( I did notice that when I tried the new multi image disk the LED's both solid RED then both flashing red then flashing amber then flashing red, the reset switch has no effect during any of these modes. I left it on for almost 2 hours).
If someone can get a copy of the BCM50 R3 I can try to restore it to a hard drive and see if the BCM 50 will recognize it.
When I tried to press the reset switch after this started, it does nothing ( since it never gets to the LED's in yellow mode now).

Thanks,
Nortech1

could be your power source, could be the hard drive

ive seen ups cause this.

It looks like the system is trying to complete the reset mode level 2. When I installed the multi image hard drive, I never get the chance to log in via PUTTY to select the load OS option. The BCM 50 appears to be trying to complete the reset and is not recognizing the multi OS HD.
Antone else ever ran into this?
Anyone able to get a copy of the BCM50 RLS 3 image? If so, I could try installing a HD with the new R3 OS and see if the BCM50 "finishes".

Thanks,
Nortech1

You are right. After selecting the level 2 reset, the unit attempts to boot a maintenance image, which is on a different partition. The multi-image hard drive is supposed to be booted from the partition with the primary OS. Due to that, you cannot use the multi-image hard drive on this system.

You should first put the multi-image hard drive into another BCM and convert it to a normal image (R3 in your case). After that, put the hard drive into the BCM50 that is in the L2 reset mode. The system will go through the L2 reset sequence and once completed, it will switch back to normal operation.

Thanks for the reply.
Already returned the multi image HD ($400.00).
Can any one get a copy of the BCM50 RLS 3 Acronis image to me? (Firebirdscrambler)???

Thanks for the reply.
* gigs is a bit much. I could set up an FTP site.... Avaya has the image in several downloads, but I no longer have the access rights....Anyone have the multi file image? I was able to back up the multi image hard drive, but I am not sure which image is R3.

I don't think there is a decent chance that you could successfully complete manual conversion of a backup of the multi-image drive into a R3 drive. I think it's not worth the time to even try. If you can create the multi-image drive from the backup, you could put it into another BCM (one that is not in the L2 reset mode), boot the image, connect to it using PuTTY and convert it to R3.

By the way, to recover the BCM50 system from the L2 reset mode, you don't really need a R3 hard drive. If you put any functional hard drive from another BCM50 into the system, the L2 reset will be invoked on that drive (hence, make sure you do a backup of your configuration before you try that).

If you by any chance have access to another BCM50 with R3, you could clone the hard drive from that system. In my opinion, this would the simplest way to recover the system.
