I have a BCM 50 that was originally a Rel 1.0 system that has been sucessfully upgraded to a r3 system. It has a 40 GB Maxtor SATA2 hard drive.

Has anyone sucessfully replaced the hard drive in these with a solid state drive?

Shoudl I be thinking of swapping out he 40 GB drive for say an 80 GB drive, which I believe is how 2.0 systems shipped?

I tried replacing a rel 1 base system with a rel3 hard drive.
The system started up ok and i was able to access the bcm with element manager ok.

The problem i had was it would not accept the rel1 key codes because it was looking for an upgrade keycode.

rel1 base with new rel1 hard drive works ok.
rel2 base with new rel2 hard drive works ok.
rel3 base with new rel3 hard drive works ok.

But you cant mix hard drives with different hard ware unless you have the upgrade keycode.

Hi,

This is a system that is fully upgraded from a rel 1 to Rel 3. Ie I have the Upgrade keycode to enable it to correctly work as a Rel 3 system.

I was really wndering if there was a way to copy the current rel 3 Maxtor (40 GB) drive onto a Solid State 80 GB drive?

you could try using Ghost to take an image of the disk, then put that image on the solid state drive. In theory it should work just fine. I don't know that Nortel would support that if an issue arose and they knew about it though. I've often wished Nortel would put solid state storage in more of their platforms. Would cut down on a lot of failures due to HD issues.

Hello Clive

Did I email you my guide of imaging BCM systems using Acronis?. It works fine and I've used other 40 Gig SATA drives with this method that I had brought of eBay a few months ago.

BCM 50 release 1 systems can be re imaged to release 2 and still retain the same keycode, but this was stopped at release 3 as snowman50 has stated!.

My FAQ should also be available but my proper guide contains pretty pictures for a step by step guide.

I don't see why a larger SATA drive can't be used for your system.

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

thanks David..

Yes I wondered if Nortel switched to a larger drive for the Rel 2.0 systems - ie those that shiped as a 2.0 - recently upgraded a 2.0 to 3.0 and it had an 80 GB Seagate drive.
