When creating a backup file it does not have a file extension, i.e., .doc, .txt etc. Does it require one? If so what is it and does it have to be added manually when creating the backup file?

it makes it a .tar for the extension, you don't have to do anything.

So my understanding from your post BombOne, is that even though there is not a file extension on the backup file itself the BCM will read it as a .tar hence the "all files" in the file type selection when backing up and restoring?

when you back it up it only asks for a path, same for restoring, just put in the path to where the file is, if you go look in the folder where the backup is stored you will see it saved as a .tar. I have only restored from my computer, to do that you just brows to the folder from element manager, and select the folder to restore from.

you will see it saved as a .tar" This is what is confusing me. If i name the file bcm_bkf, after the backup is complete and i browse to the saved location it still says bcm_bkf not bcm_bkf.tar Is this normal? I thought all files required an extension so the OS would know what application to use to open it?

are you looking at it through element manager, or looking it at it through windows where you stored it, element manager doesnt show the extension. if you are looking at the pc with the stored file and it doesn't have an extension I would be concerned.

I am looking at it through my PC. I ran the backup to save it to my desktop and named it tcs_bcm_bkf When i look at on my desktop that is how it was saved - tcs_bcm_bkf with no file extension.

BTW BombOne, when you save a backup to your PC (windows im assuming) you do see the .tar extension on the file name?

I copied one to my desk top this morning, it doesnt say .tar on the desktop, but if I look at the properties of the file it says file type .tar. Also if I use explorer and look at my desktop it shows my backup as a .tar

I have looked at the properties of the file on my desktop and through explorer and neither place shows a file extension. I have everything set under folder options to show all file extensions so that is not the problem and i can see the file extension for every other file on my PC. I spoke with my supplier and they dont know the answer either at this point. If you have a chance BombOne could you run a backup to your desktop and see how it is saved?

wow, thats strange, I have around 25 of these BCM 50's all doing sceduled backups to a server, when I look at the folders they are in, all the files are .tar, when I copy them to my PC they are still .tar, I did an imediate backup to my desk top and it just shows the file type as type. I did select it for a restore and it took it and uploaded it succesfully to the bcm, I didnt apply it but it looked like it would work, so if you have a good backup to your desktop I would think that will be fine. the one I tested is a small site with little voice mail, the file size was 7.8 meg.

Yes it is strange. My file type shows up as File. Go figure. Im going to try a bkf to a different location and see if it shows up as a .tar. I tell you, silicone and software are going to do me in! Thanks for help BombOne. Ill make one more post about my results later today.

I ran the backup to a folder on the root of my c: drive with the same results, no file extension. Hopefully i can find a definitive answer on this soon as it would suck to have a bunch of useless backups! Thanks for the help BombOne

I wouldnt worry aout it to much, maby it only puts the extension when you scedule a backup, the one I did for a test yesterday doesnt have an extension on it, but it is still a good backup file.
