I have about 7 BCM50 control units that have been replaced out in the field due to being dead or not functioning.
What is the best thing to do with them-try replacing the hard drives - see if we can get them running. Or scrap them..???
There is a very good chance that if you put new drives into these units, they will work fine. Get the Acronis cloning software, take a hard drive out of a BCM50 with the same release, clone it to a new hard drive and give it a try.
You just need to be a bit careful when buying the new hard drive - BCM50 does not recognize all drives. It must be SATA II drive (not SATA III) and its capacity shouldn't be more than 500 GB. I'd try something like the Samsung Spinpoint F3 250GB drive:
The problem with getting old BCMs working again is getting them registered again with Avaya. If you regenerated the keycodes on those units because they failed, that system will not be allowed to register to KRS again without getting Avaya to reset the sysid in KRS, so they might wind up being useless for resale or as spare units for systems that may fail in the future. If they're less than release 6, then getting them upgraded and licensed may be a bit of a chore unless you know someone at Avaya.
