In the process of replacing a failing BCM 50. I have a backup from the old unit. New unit has the keycodes regenerated, but when I try to restore to the new cab I get "Failed to extract signature from archive". They are both R6.

That might be because the patch levels are different. Make sure you apply the latest updates to the system with the drive you plan on leaving in, then try the restore again.

Not sure if that's the specific problem but trying to restore from a backup that has "higher" patch levels than the one you're trying to restore to will cause this type of issue.

Thanks I'll check that.

The golden rule that I follow for rebuilding a BCM system is..

Set the time zone and date.
Apply the keycode
Apply the same release or latest system patch for that release of software
Apply any other crucial patches.
Restore the database.

I've found that it has to be done in that order, otherwise you might have problems.
