BCM 450 3 or 4 digit dialing between sites

BCM 450 customer with two other sites - both BCM 50's. All three systems are three digit extensions and are on the customer LAN. They do have a VPN between the sites for their data network. Briefly, can I set up a three digit dialing plan between the sites? Or must it be four?

As long as the extension numbers are unique between the sites you should be able to use 3 digits.

OK - can you expound on the reason it is best to use four digit? Briefly where do I set it up programming wise in the BCM's?
