Hi all, I'm having an issue with a BCM 400 V3.7 Build 2.4f, every 15 minutes or so, ALL the digital phones seem to reset or get reinitialized. This started happening a week ago which I thought was due to heat issues but now it's happening again today and the AC is working just fine. I was able to make the problem go away (for a while at least) by doing a complete power-down. I'm no expert with the BCM and I'm not sure how to troubleshoot, could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

Brad

Further Investigation, I did find in the "Operational Metrics Information" that has detected "Total Temperature Failures - 146", this number might be consistent with how many times it has reset itself in the past 2 weeks. The SSM shows both fans being operational and the CPU and case temp being normal. Any suggestions?

Is it up to date w/ the current patches? We had a system w/ sets that would reset randomly and patching cleared the problem.

Power the unit down and open up the case. Use compressed air to blow the thing out completely from all directions. Spend a good five minutes to make sure you've cleared it out.

When your watching the the Modules in the BCM, do all the MODs start flashing or just 1 or 2. I have this problem with a trunk MOD and found it was a power connector on the back plain. I deplaced the power supply and that fixed the problem.

Sorry for just getting back to this now, the reply emails were going to junk...

Onyx1 - I haven't been keeping up with the patches as I'm scared to mess it up, are the patches mainly for security purposes? It is a V3.7 Build 2.4f, do you know if there's a cumulative patch that will bring me to 4.0?

MagnaRGP - I'll definitely give that a shot, I bought it used and it's been running for almost two years so I'm sure there's a good bit of dust in there.

acewarlock/MichaelCC - I did try and look at the BFT when it occurred but didn't see anything blinking except the HDD, I do have redundant power supplies, do you think I can try swapping them?

Patches are all sorts of issues including false fan indications. You need to keep it up to date...especially if you plan to get Nortel help. Not up to date = no help.

While you are cleaning it out, follow ace's suggestion and verify the power connectors are all ok. Take your time on this.

When you're in there cleaning, rock the dip switches on the Media Bay Modules as well..

Popeyediceclay:

The only way to get your system up to Rls 4.0 is by purchasing the 3.7-4.0 upgrade kit. As of May there was a Cumulative #3 patch. I'm sure there are more now. The patches cover a wide range of things. If cleaning the dust out of your system doesn't help, I suggest bringing your system up to date w/ all the patches before replacing h/w.

Also try moving the module to another slot or swap it with another.

You said you bought the system used about 2 years ago. Do you know if the system was upgraded from a previous version? If so I would check for a bad BFT or MSC.

WOW, thanks for all the replies thus far! Sorry I haven't cracked it open just yet, just waiting for the right opportunity.

One other question about the upgrade to 4.0, I found the kit for ~$550, do I need to apply all current patches to 3.7 before running 4.0?

Not required, but I would at least ensure that the latest SU and bios patches have been run.

Yes and no, the problem seems to have gone away although I still haven't opened it up yet. I'm thinking it's because I set the temperature in the server room to 65 degrees but should it need to be that cold to run well? I'm definitely going to do the maintenance and patches suggested above, I'm just a little timid given my BCM knowledge and would feel better if I had the BCM imaging tool before doing anything major. From what I've read it seems like a fool-proof way to back it up in case of catastophic failure, unless it's hardware related of course.

Hi all, I'm having trouble locating where to get the latest patches for version 3.7, could anyone direct me? I heard there is a cumulative patch 3 that brings it current but it doesn't show on Nortel's site.

TIA
