I have to install a BCM 400 soon with future considerations of VoIP trunking to a BCM 50 at a secondary site. The only need for VoIP is transferring, 4-digit dialing, etc. No centralized VM. The BCM 50 site has been up and running and has existing extensions in the "4000" range. Given that tid bit of info, do I need to necessarily make the new intstall site(BCM 400) as 4-digit extensions as well? Are there other Dial Plan considerations that I need to be aware of?

Secondly,
I don't fully understand the circa 1960's Bus/Dipswitch criteria. I have a stand alone(no expansion unit) BCM 400 with the following MBM's:

DSM 32 MBM (E5)
GASM8 MBM (E5)
Digital Trunk MBM (E5)
Global 4 X 16 MBM (E5)

Do I need to be concerned about which order these need to be installed into the 400?

Thanks in advance.

PS: Get ready everyone, you are most likely going to be hearing from me alot soon. Some of my questions may seem remedial to most of you, but I came from the Avaya world and am still trying to sort out the Nortel products. I have never done IP with BCM's. Is there a guide anywhere that actually helps instead of constantly referring the reader to other documentation?

The order they are installed in the Media Bay slots is of no concern. The 1960's style dip switches tell the BCM which Bus to use for each device. In the Installation and Maintenance Guide for BCM 400 4.0 (I'm assuming that's what you have), chapter 8 explains how to set dip switches for trunk modules as well as station modules. Normal configuration would be to start your station modules at Bus 2 and the trunk modules on Bus 7 working up. The DSM32+ and the DTM use one whole Bus. The GASM8 uses 1/4 of a BUS and the 4x16 is a bit more confusing. The line portion of the 4x16 (the 4) takes up 1/4 of a bus and the station portion (the 16) uses a whole Bus. Also, the lines go first and the stations take the next Bus in line...meaning - If you assign the 4x16 to Bus 5, the lines will be on Bus 5 and the stations will be on Bus 6. That being said you cannot assign another Module to Bus6 and you cannot assign the 4x16 to the last available Bus on the system.

Wow, I have to stop....I'm confusing myself! There is definitely a lot of info involved in the configuration of the modules. Read through that chapter and post back if you have more questions. Hopefully this gets you started.

Thomen,
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your detailed post. Thanks a million!!

Let me know if you have any notes on Fax Messaging with custom cover pages. Thanks

Yes make your new site 4-digit as well. Use a DN range that won't conflict w/ the other site.
