BCM 400 4.0 RAID problem

Hello,

I have a BCM400 that I recently upgraded from 3.6 to 4.0. Prior to the upgrade, I had installed a RAID kit and the mirror process went through successfully. However the BCM failed the precheck tool before the upgrade due to incorrect partition sizes.

I sent the primary drive to a BCM vendor and got it re-imaged. I was told to wipe the secondary drive clean (i.e. delete partitions) before reconnecting the primary to the RAID assembly, or I would risk having the wrong drive re-imaged. I wiped the drive clean (deleted all partitions) but connected the new re-imaged primary as a standalone first. The system booted up but STILL failed the pre-check tool also for incorrect partition sizes.

I sent this drive back to the vendor and they told me they couldn't fix it, instead they sent me a brand new factory-sealed 3.6 hard drive. It's a Seagate 80 GB drive and I installed this drive, booted the BCM successfully, and this one finally passed the precheck and I did the upgrade successfully.

Finally, I reconnected the (blank) secondary drive together with the primary in the RAID assembly. When I installed it in the BCM, the system would not boot - instead, the status light on the RAID module was red and the system emitted a loud beep every few seconds. I left it for an hour but it never booted. I finally shut it down, reconnected the primary as a standalone, and booted the system successfully.

The vendor is telling me that the secondary drive is defective and must be replaced. However I can connect this drive to a PC and it works normally. Are there some partitions I need to create on the secondary for the RAID imaging to work? What does the beeping and red status light indicate anyway? I am at my wit's end and the vendor is not giving me much help.

Sorry, just bumping the post back up. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would really appreciate it.

I think the drive needs at least 1 partition on it.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

Have them send you a clean 4.0 drive and install it as the secondary drive. The RAID will take care of the rest.
