Recently had a BCM 3.5 hard drive crash, but was unsure of the software level. I assumed it was at 3.7, so I put a 3.7 Imaged Hard drive into the system. The system came up fine, but it cannot dial a BCM 3.5 via VOIP trunks, but the 3.5 can dial it through the VOIP trunks. I am having a feeling this is an MSC issue. When I put in the hard drive, it was already "pre-initialized" on a separate system. Therefore the MSC card on the system having the issues may be at 3.5 still. Is there a way to initialize the MSC card without it wiping any of the programming?

Curlycord, this is my challenge of the day to you.. ;)

Thanks!!

Well I am not the BCM wizard like some folks here.

Seems like you tried to upgrade upgrade from 3.5 to 3.7 without a key code or software upgrade?
I am guessing there is other things that may not work correctly until you enter an upgrade key code like NTKC0135?

Proper method (again I assume) is to purchase and install key code then do the software upgrade or swap out the hard drive to 3.7.

To be sure is this all done?:
- the IP remote gateway is programmed on the 3.7 pointing to the 3.5
- the 3.5 has the required target lines programmed as the DN and as private
- the sets have correct Dest code pointing to correct routes.
- routes using correct pool letter?
- trunks in that same pool letter?

out of ammo!

The operating Keycodes are based on the SYS ID located on the MSC Card. Therefore, if you loaded the PREVIOUS keycodes from the 3.5 system into the now 3.7 system (because of the new hard drive), the system will not operate properly.

So, basically, you have two options here:
1. As Curlycord suggested, you will need to purchase a 3.5 to 3.7 Upgrade keycode, but more than likely you will have to get that from third party as Avaya\Nortel ended support on 3.5 and 3.7 sometime back.

2. Re-image the hard drive as a 3.5 system, install, and restore the keycodes that were on the 3.5 system.

My suspicions are that you are going to have more issues than just the VoIP trunks not working properly. You can probably look for the Voice Mail application to get "screwy" as well.

Unlike the 3.0-3.5 Upgrades, the 3.7 was a billable upgrade because of the feature enhancements such as Digital Mobility and so on.

Hope this helps!
Have a blessed day!

I had replaced hard drives in 3.X systems with 3.7 drives when I didn't have a good backup. You only needed to purchase the upgrade license if you wanted to retain programming. However if you try to restore any part of a 3.5 or 3.6 backup to a 3.7 hard drive, you'd have issues that required a reimage.

There is a patch for 3.5 systems that needed to be installed on the 3.5 systems to make them compatible with VoIP trunks to 3.7 and maybe 3.6 systems. I want to say it was a mspqos patch. It's been a heck of a long time so I may be wrong.

I tend to hoard old software fixes so I could look for that patch and see if I still have it.

I also have loads of old patches if anyone needs them. Just contact me if there is a particular one that is required.

The BCM keycodes will OK on a 3.7 if you are programming from scratch.

All the best

I checked and I must have deleted all my 3.01 and 3.5 patches. It's been several years since I ran across a system with that software. Almost ever 3.X system I've worked on in the past couple years has been 3.6 or 3.7, and thankfully those are getting less common.
