Hi Folks,

I've just got hold of a second-hand Baystack Workgroup Switch, model no. AL2001001. I don't know the admin password, and more importantly, the IP address it is configured with. So, I cannot telnet to the switch via the console port.

I'm just learning about networking so would be very grateful if anyone can give me some tips as to how to get around this. I don't have access to other network equipment, just my PC and Sun machine :-(

I have contacted Nortel, and although they sent me the user manual in .pdf, this does not contain the info I need, and they won't give me any tech support....

Please help!

Thanks,

Max

If you connect via the console, you should not need to telnet to it. You use a terminal program as it should be mentioned on the manual tech supp sent you. Once you make a successful connection it should just ask you for a password. Reboot the switch and when it asks you for the password again you can put in "satisfaction" without the quotes. You only have a few seconds to put in this password after it asks you for it so you need to do it fast and not wait too long.

Thanks! Now to try and get a terminal program! Any ideas as to where I can download one please?

On Windows, it is in Start. Programs. Accessories and is called Hyperterminal (exact name and location vary by version, the 2000 version is rumored to be defective)

On Classic macs the shareware Z-term is available I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

D'Oh! The thought of using Hyperterminal never even crossed my mind - I thought that it would need something far more arcane & specialised!

Sometimes we overlook the best solution because we are convinced the answer will be complex!

Thank you both for taking the time to reply, I have successfully connected and am able to configure my switch. The Windows 2000 version of Hyperterminal appears, in this instance anyway, to work fine.
