Hi all,
I have noticed that ping results to BayStack 450 within lan are around 20-40 ms whereas pings to any end host within lan are in less than 1 ms. Does it mean that my BayStack 450 is too busy? If so, what should i examine?
I would be sure the firmware is up to date, I know that some firmwares prioritize user traffic oover ICMP to the management address, so that users are less discomforted than administrators.
I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
I'm not sure what the 'normal' response time for a 450 will be but network equipment usually places a low priority on responding to ping packets. Additionally, the main processor that provides CLIs and responds to pings and SNMP requests are often fairly slow by modern standards, especially in an older switch like the 450. Traffic forwarding is handled by specialized ASIC chips, the main CPU simply coordinates their activity.
Unless you have reason to suspect that your network is being flooded with 'control' traffic like pings or IGMP messages the response times for the 450s shouldn't be much reason for concern.
Also, I seem to remember that some 450 firmwave versions had issues with the management response times. You might check that you have the latest code version.
