Hi guys

I was wondering if someone could possibly help me with what would be the correct way or best method for working out the state of our Battries for our UPS's.

We have a number of sites gloabally and im trying to workout which sites we need to replace the UPS's on.

logging into the Webui of the UPS i can gain various bit of information like below:

UPS status

On Line, No Alarms Present
Reason For Last Transfer To Battery: Due to software command or UPS's test control.
Internal Temperature: 022.0 °C
Runtime: 2 hours 25 minutes

Utility power status
Input Voltage: 234.7 VAC
Input Frequency: 50.00 Hz
Maximum Line Voltage: 236.1 VAC
Minimum Line Voltage: 230.4 VAC

Output power status
Output Voltage: 234.7 VAC
Output Frequency: 50.00 Hz
Load Power: 007.1 % Watts

Battery status
Battery Capacity: 100.0 %
Battery Voltage: 27.67 VDC
Number of External Batteries: 000
Self-Test Result: Passed
Self-Test Date: 10/30/2009
Calibration Result: Unknown
Calibration Date: Unknown

About UPS
Model: Smart-UPS 1500 RM
Firmware Revision: 617.3.I
Manufacture Date: 08/23/06
Serial Number: AS0*********

From this the only real info i can think to go from is the Manufacture Date and maybe the runtime but the runtime may not be a indication of the battery life and maybe the load?

Anyway advice is much appriated.

Thanks in advance.

APC products tend to over charge the batteries. These type batteries last 3-5 years as an industry standard. Since APC overcharges the batteries i would replace them every 3 years. When you Charge a battery with a higher voltage the positive plate swell and make the cases bulge. When this happens, it make it very difficult to remove these batteries from the UPS. If you google your UPS you should be able to find a replacement battery.

Good Luck

Thanks for the good advice. That precisely what i need.

Thanks again

I completely agree with DLynn908, the good quality batteries are designed to last for 3-5 years. The crappy cheap batteries usually last for 6-12months. If you have the good ones you're in good shape. Also, it depends on what kind of abuse the batteries took. If they were treated nicely and didn't get discharged too often you can easily get 4 or even 5 years out of them. But, if you replace them on the 3rd year you know that you always have a proper long run time.

I agree with all of you, only that sometimes it might be interesting to buy 10 years batteries. Depending of course on the load.
If you have realy critical application you should consider it.
But then probably you would not buy an APC UPS.
