how do you determine how many batteries are needed for a 61c DC switch?

Check the Engineering and Planning Manual, this all depends on the run-time you want. You will never have enough, but you have to call it somewhere whether it be 2 hours or 8 hours.

ok..we only need to hold it up for a few minutes until the building generator kicks in. there are currently 8 batteries on it now that are bad. We will be replacing them, just dont know if I need more than 8 or not.

An Option 61 could be in several configurations and multiple columns. Hard to tell what you have. The key to this is the amp hours on the battery and how long you want to hold the system up. You need to come up with 48 volts in any combination you want, 4 12 volt batteries, 8 6 bolt batteries or any combination you want but it needs to equal 48 volts. Have you looked at the batteries to see if they are 12 or 6 volt?

they are 12 volt batteries...just two columns on the 61

You also have to plan for one day when they do power maintenance and there won't be generator power. How long do you need the PBX for on that day? You could get by with cell phones if you don't have a call centre to worry about on weekends.

Just from what you are saying I would go back with the 8 batteries. Just check the amp hours and get the same type.

That's your best bet
