hi. I am having problems with a strong ping response from my various boxes. I have 2003 server and 2 xp boxes. when i ping either of them, i sometimes get a response, sometimes dont, or sometimes get a mix of both. I have a public and private connection on the server. the private connection is
192.169.0.1
i have left the gateway blank
the dns server is the one assigned by my isp
68.63.80.5

when i add the ISP gateway values, i get an error saying that the default value is not the same as the network subnet so, i have left it blank.

my public config is

IP 68.46.220.17
Mask 255.255.255.0
GW 68.46.220.1
DNS: 68.63.80.5

When i run netdiag all pass with warnings about the
lack of a gateway and that i may not have good replication
on my dns server.

could somebody help me solve my gateway problem (and explain dns replication),

thanks in advance.

. Your private IP address is incorrect, 192.169.x.x is a public not private IP range.

. You need to setup the Windows 2003 DNS server properly; see faq779-4017 for some notes that can help. Essentially on the clients the only DNS address should be the Server.

hi. thanks. i am sorry, i mistyped. it is the private range of 192.168.etc. I am really stumped on how the two network cards relate to eachother in my gateway/router machine. the private card is 192.168.0.1 and is responsible for three other machines .2,.3,.4 accordingly. The public card is DHCP assigned from Comcast IP is 68.46.220.17. I would really appreciate it if somebody could explain how my private card is configured relative to my public card. Is the gateway in my private card the IP address of my public card (as is done with the nodes on the client network)? My router/gateway can ping itself but it can't ping other machines and other machines can't ping the routher/gateway machine. DNS is installed (i used the server 2003 wizard) and seems to be set up correctly (seems).

Help much appreciated.
