Basic set-up of wireless LINKSYS WAG54G Gateway (modem router)

In order to set-up this modem/router up one puts the ip address of the Gateway into the address line of IE when I do this instead of accessing the Gateway it tries to connect to this ip address via my previous modem/adsl provider (sagem/pipex). Do the seeting in IE tools internet options have to be changed so that the browswer will not try to connect via this route. I can ping the gateway's default ip address from a dos command line. I have tried a setting static ip address for the computer.

Any tips?
